ATLSmb.ca - Manitoba ATLS Program

The Manitoba ATLS Program located at ATLSmb.ca (site still under development) is administered by the University of Manitoba's Department of Surgery

Note:We do not normally accept out-of province applications (with the exception of north-western Ontario); however, if a spot becomes available one month prior to the course, we may be able to accommodate. Please email admin@atlsmb.ca for more information.

About

A systematic and consistent approach is essential for the effective assessment and resuscitation of a traumatized patient. ATLS® uses the “ABCDE” approach to define an orderly progression of evaluation and intervention.

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Demonstrate concepts and principles of primary and secondary assessment.
  • Establish management priorities, treating the greatest threat to life first.
  • Initiate resuscitative measures needed for the emergent care of life-threatening and potentially life-threatening injuries.
  • Demonstrate the practical skills used in the initial assessment and management of patients with multiple injuries.

The course consists of the following:

  • Pre-course Test - completed online prior to the course.
  • Core Content Lectures in didactic and interactive formats.
  • Practical Skill Stations.
  • Surgical Skills Practicum.
  • Triage Scenarios.
  • Initial Assessment and Management Skill Stations (simulated patients).
  • Post-course Test.

Successful completion of the course requires full attendance, passing grades in the skill stations and IA station and a post course test mark of 70% or higher. A verification card indicating successful completion of the course will be issued.

  • Thoracic Trauma
  • Abdominal and Pelvic Trauma
  • Head Trauma
  • Spine and Spinal Cord Trauma
  • Musculoskeletal Trauma
  • Thermal Injuries
  • Trauma in the Extremes of Age (Pediatric/Elderly)
  • Trauma in Pregnancy & Intimate Partner Violence
  • Transfer to Definitive Care

Demonstrations:

  • Primary and Secondary Assessment
  • Splinting and Helmet Removal

Practical Skill Stations:

  • Airway & Ventilation
  • Shock
  • X-ray Identification of Thoracic Injuries
  • Head & Neck Trauma Management
  • X-ray Identification of Spinal Injures
  • Spinal Cord Injury Assessment & Management
  • Musculoskeletal Trauma

Surgical Skills Practicum:

  • Peritoneal Lavage
  • Chest Decompression
  • Pericardiocentesis
  • Cricothyroidotomy

PROVIDER COURSE:

This is a 2-day course for any physician involved in the care of the trauma patient. Registration is limited.

REFRESHER COURSE:

The card verifying successful completion of the ATLS® course is valid for 4 years from the date of issue. To maintain a current status in the ATLS® Program, a refresher course is necessary every 4 years.

FOR DOCTORS

The treatment of seriously injured patients requires rapid and accurate assessment plus timely resuscitation.

The ATLS® course provides physicians with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage the trauma patient.
