The EDTU Roadshow is an introductory EDTU course that teaches all the essential skills for emergency ultrasound. It is an evidence-based course teaching ultrasound physics, image generation and interpretation, ultrasound psychomotor skills, and indications for and limitations of EDTU. These goals are achieved by both didactic and practical teaching sessions. Short focused didactic sessions allow maximum time for practical hands on ultrasound experience. Both normal and true positive live models are used during the practical sessions.

Educational objectives

At the end of this program, the participant should be able to: 

1. Understand the basics of ultrasound physics, image generation and interpretation, and image artifact.
2. Understand the different types of probes used to generate images and the “knobology” of the ultrasound machine.
3. Generate limited focused images for all the primary applications of EDTU including FAST, echocardiography, abdominal aorta, pelvic ultrasound in pregnancy, and procedural ultrasound.
4. Identify all the important anatomic structures on an ultrasound image that are necessary to interpret the primary examinations.
5. Learn the psychomotor skills necessary to generate accurate ultrasound images.
6. Understand the indications for and limitations of EDTU.
7. Understand the difference between EDTU and a formal ultrasound performed in the radiology department.
8. Understand how EDTU is to be used in the clinical assessment of patients and clinical algorithms for patient care.
9. Understand the requirements for training and certification in EDTU.
10. Understand the importance of establishing and maintaining a quality assurance program at your local emergency department.
