Description
Intro to iClickers
iClickers are radically engaging and easy to use. They really liven up a grand rounds and provide valuable feedback while remaining relatively unobtrusive to the talk.
There is a bit of a learning curve but it is not that difficult to feel like a pro in short order.
If your department does not already own a set of iClickers and base station they are available for loan from the Dean's office in the Faculty of Medicine.
To learn more check out the links below.
Most of the info in the 3rd party video links below are accurate regarding the iClicker's use at the U of Manitoba excepting that often the iClickers are supplied by the individual departments during a given teaching session then retrieved at the end of that session. Also individuals personal responses are not generally tracked.
Gotcha > Mac Keynote Pref snafu
There is a little known keynote pref that blocks any app from appearing over the slide presentation. This is done to prevent embarrassing pop-ups from fouling the clean look of your killer talk. Unfortunately it also blocks the iClicker app. If you have this pref enabled then disable it now. Mac's never have intrusive pop-ups they are too supremely crafted.
That pref is located in the [Keynote ]> [Preferences] > [Slideshow ]> [enable the 'Allow Expose, Dashboard and others to use the sceen' ]
Sadly for iClicker Keynote users this pref is turned off initialy by default and it is not an easy one to figure out as a novice. Fortunately it is a one-time fix.
This allows Keynote to 'live in peace' with the iClicker overlay.
The other thing to enable is the ability of your mouse pointer to be visible over a slide presentation. This is also curiously and maddenlingly turned off by default. You need to be able to see your pointer to interact with the iClicker control panel.
Gotcha > Mac Lion not compatable with older version of iClicker.app software
If you are using Lion you will need to download the latest mac OSX iclicker.app from iCLicker.com. Load it ahead of time - it is a big download. The one app you will need out of all that comes with the download is the iClicker.app in the Mac folder. We suggest keeping a copy of this app on your hard drive's applications folder and dragging it to the dock so that it is always there when you need it. You will need to be connected to a base station to test if it works properly so leave yourself enough time before a presentation to test it all out.
